Actually, I wonder if it isn't a nod to ancestors who were Jewish and served in the Confederate Army? Such a thing was common, especially in Charleston, SC and other 'major' cities in the South during that time.

The NY Times had an extremely interesting article regarding a book on this lesser known facet of the Confederacy.
